Apple and Google are preparing to implement a new messaging system between iOS and Android, which will improve the quality, security, and functionality of conversations between users of the two systems. Find out what changes and when it will come into effect.

Will Android and iPhone finally communicate better?
What changes with the new collaboration

If you've ever exchanged messages between an iPhone and an Android, you know the experience was never perfect. Failed photo sends, emojis that don't appear as they should, low-quality videos... it seems like a small detail, but when it comes to communicating with friends, family, or clients, it makes a difference.

The good news is that this is about to change. Android and iPhone are working together to improve how the two systems exchange messages. And this could transform the experience as early as 2026.

What's changing

Google and Apple have announced they will apply a new standard to messages exchanged between the two systems. The technical name is RCS — Rich Communication Services.

In practice, it will allow:

  • Sending full-quality photos and videos
  • Seeing when the other person is typing
  • Receiving read receipts
  • Reacting with emojis universally
  • Communicating more securely

All this without needing to use apps like WhatsApp.

When will this happen?

RCS has been around on Android for some time, but iPhones didn't support it yet.
Apple confirmed it will implement this system in 2026, although it's still in the testing phase.

When that happens, communicating between different systems will no longer be a headache.

Why this matters

Anyone with an iPhone who messages someone with an Android, or vice versa, knows that things don't always work well. This change will:

  • Improve mixed groups, such as family or work
  • Ensure higher quality sharing
  • Make messages more reliable without internet

All this helps reduce reliance on external apps and simplifies life.

And WhatsApp? Will it stop being used?

No. This change only affects regular phone messages.
WhatsApp, Messenger, and other apps will continue to exist as always.
But now, if someone doesn't have these apps installed, they will still be able to communicate with higher quality.
